In this video, we’re taking a look at Kato Precision Model’s N-Scale version of the Rhaetian Railway’s ABe 8/12 Elecrtric Multi Unit (EMU) also known as the “Allegra”.

I’m an American modeler building an N-Scale layout based on Switzerland’s Rhaetian Railway. In N-Scale one of the only sources for ready to run model is Kato Precision models, and they’re not available through Kato USA. I’ve gone through the trouble of importing one of these models and this is how it shapes up.

Since the Rhätoscje Bhan is a very niche railroad, at least for American audiences, I’ve also included a lot of background information on the Railroad, and the prototype. If you already know this stuff, then you might want to skip ahead to 12:11 when I get to the model itself.

Kato’s model is a solid preformere that’s extremely well detailed and painted. However, it is over geared, and runs far too fast for the prototype, and likely any model operation. This can be addressed, at least in part, with a DCC conversion but doing so if not an easy feat.
