C55形はC51形の後継機として1935年に登場した蒸気機関車で、ドームの形状や動輪のスポークに水かきと呼ばれる補強が加わるなど、同形以前の蒸気機関車と比べて外観が近代化されたのが特徴です。旭川機関区に所属したC55形は晩年は宗谷本線全線で旅客列車のけん引に使用されましたが、1974年秋頃に全車運用を離脱しました。

The C55 steam locomotive, introduced in 1935 as the successor to the C51, features a more modern appearance than its predecessors, including a dome shape and reinforced wheel spokes called webbed fins. The C55s, belonging to the Asahikawa Locomotive Depot, were used to pull passenger trains on the entire Soya Main Line in their final years, but were all withdrawn from service in the fall of 1974.
