A Locomotive With No Driver? Unique B-Unit! – Model Showcase HO Scale BN GP38-2B 2601

The Electro-Motive Division (EMD) GP38-2 was introduced in the early 1970s as an upgrade of the older GP38 model. These 2000 horsepower non-turbo locomotives were workhorses, and could be found all over North America doing a wide variety of railroad jobs.

Like many railroads, Burlington Northern had a lot of GP38-2s. Accidents happen, and one wreck damaged unit was rebuilt without a cab to become BN 2601. This locomotive was one of BNs only GP38-2 B-units.

A B-unit is a locomotive without a cab that is designed to be used with another locomotive to provide additional power. It has it’s own diesel prime mover and traction motors, but lacks a full-featured cab with controls. When set up for multiple-unit (MU) service with another locomotive, the B-unit’s functions are controlled from the lead unit.

BN had a number of B-units, but 2601 was unique on the roster.

Dan used an HO scale Proto 2000 GP38-2 model as the basis for this kitbash. A donor Atlas GP9 shell was used for the new front section. BN used part of a GP7 or GP9 to make the real thing, so the result is very accurate.

Dan added new details, underbody details, wire grab irons, custom brass handrails, Cannon fans, and more!

The headlights are done with fiber optics and warm white LEDs. This model is one of the few Dan has built with DCC but no sound. Since it would always run with another locomotive, Dan thought it didn’t really need to have its own sound.
