Railway modellers often take ourselves very seriously most of the time but every so often a layout comes along that is willing to break away from tradition. Burdock, this delightful N Gauge layout, is one that not only showcases some brilliant scenic and modelling techniques but also dares to have fun.
Set at a fictional station on the Golden Valley line between Swindon and Stroud, the layout features incredible scenery including a viaduct. Most of the trains on the layout are prototypical of what would have been seen at the time but every so often an experimental loco or two will pass through. Even the Hogwarts Express makes a magical appearance and my personal favourite, the Rubber Duck trains! What do I mean by that? Well you’ll have to watch to find out!
Most importantly the operators of Burdock know how to keep a crowd entertained! There’s never a dull moment on this layout as the trains are moving pretty constantly. And while I’m sure many will be keen to point out the historical inaccuracies of a train comprised of rubber ducks, everyone around me while I was filming this layout had a massive smile on their face. We need more of this in the hobby and I for one am glad that Burdock’s owners and operators are not shy to share their fantastic sense of humour.
