The layout is based in the British Rail Strathclyde orange and black era of around 1991. The old town of Dunloune sits on the opposite side of Loch Brae, but the importance of the harbour grew to such an extent that the small village of Bramuir overtook in importance. Rationalisation in later years saw only Braemuir Harbour survive in the area, with both Braemuir Junction station and the Dunloune lines all closed by the 1970s with Braemuir Harbour itself barely surviving.
Regeneration in the area has enabled the line to have a new lease of life and bow Braemuir Harbour is the southern most terminus of the SPT network. Recent electrification has resulted in new EMUs becoming the staple traffic, but with occasional visits still by newer and heritage DMUs.
Regional pressure has also seen the trial of a sleeper portion off the Lowland Sleeper providing through services to London Euston whilst the sandy beaches and regeneration have also made Braemuir a popular destination for charter services.
