The fourth floor of AEON Mall in Kyoto is home to a bunch of chain restaurants, as well as a bunch of stores celebrating every niche interest and hobby they could fit in.
There are stores where the whole space is dedicated to a specific manga, anime or other Japanese IP.
There are stores that catch all of the IP that couldn’t fill its own store.
There is a fabulous store stocked with classic lollies…
And then there is the Tomix model train store on full display, out in the open, with no fear that someone would see you buying model trains and think you were a bit young for that.
The engine themselves start at around $100 Aussie dollars, and then you buy the carriages, and then the specifically labelled case for that train.
Then you come in to the Tomix store with your mates and hire some track time and sit around and make the trains go forward and make the trains go backward and swap the trains and put your head real low to the tracks to imagine you are watching the real thing and switch the tracks and make sure the new trains don’t run into the old trains and talk about trains that you have seen and trains that you like, and there are other young people there doing the same thing.
I don’t want to build a model railroad, but I love that you have that option in Japan.
Japan, where anyone can get really interested in anything and that is okay!
