Recycled Dome Cars? – Unboxing and Product Review of Rapido’s HO Scale SP Dome Lounge Cars
In the 1950s, Southern Pacific used kits from the Budd Company to rebuild seven older passenger cars into dome lounge cars. These cars were often called “three-quarter” domes since the domes were not quite full length.
These cars provided a place for passengers to relax and enjoy the scenery. The cars had comfortable seats, tables, and a bar at one end.
Rapido offers these cars in three different SP paint schemes, Daylight red and orange, UP yellow for use on the Overland, and red and silver. They are also available in Amtrak colors. There’s even a Canadian Pacific version of car 3505, the “Selkirk”.
With all that glass, these cars have incredible detailed interiors. Details abound. All they need are some HO scale passengers.
This car has lighting that is controlled with an included magnetic wand and requires no programming.
As usual, Dan evaluates the car’s packaging, prototype accuracy, paint & detail, and how well it operates and conforms to applicable standards.
If you’re a fan of the Southern Pacific, passenger cars, or just trains in general be sure to check out this unboxing and product review!
