Articulated tram running in Mode / Program 3, which resembles a Z pattern. My main interest is in using this for mountainside-hillside switchback operations, as were used on many lumber and mining railways.
A contemporary example in Japan would be the Hakone Tozan Railway – which is well documented online.
I have the “hold” time set to zero, but any non-zero setting will cause the tram to pause at one of the stopping points before reversing and going back the other way. I have the “momentum” set so that the tram will coast to almost the absolute end of each track.
One critical issue in building a model switchback operation is vertical easement, which has to do with the rapidity (or lack thereof) that the rails “bend” from level to a steep slope. However, trams can generally handle this better than trains with longer wagons.
